Gender-Based Violence Learning Exchange

GroundBreakers hosted the Gender-Based Violence Learning Exchange to create a safe space to discuss the gendered impacts of COVID-19 and the shadow pandemic of Gender-Based Violence. The full video recording is linked below.

The Learning Exchange featured special guest Isata Kabia, Founder of Voice of Women – Sierra Leone (VoW-SL), an organization working to increase women’s political participation and leadership in Sierra Leone. Isata is also the CEO of AFRiLOSOPHY and was elected as the first female Member of Parliament from the Port Loko district in Northern Sierra Leone. The discussion was hosted by Onyeka Nwabunnia, an African feminist, writer and activist.

The discussion ranged from current policies in place to protect survivors of Gender-Based Violence, the need for culturally sensitive education, and the importance of women’s leadership in public life.

As stated by Isata, “We need compassion within our leadership to understand that people need people. Survivors need a system that is built for them as opposed to against them.”

The Gender-Based Learning Exchange was hosted by the African Collaboration Network, a GroundBreakers initiative functioning as a centralized resource hub for leaders across the continent to connect and collaborate during COVID-19 and beyond.
